This Week on the Island 08/29/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Coconut Trees on South Roosevelt looking out at the Atlantic’. Another picture stolen from http://conchscooter.blogspot.com/. I love his blog.
Weather: August and hot and humid. Hurricanes Daniel and Earl are headed toward Bermuda.
This week I finished ‘Rough Draft’ by James W. Hall.
No dogs in bars yet.
Not a lot happening this week. School has started. Five states had primaries on Tuesday and Florida was one, so we voted.
Last Thursday Jo had been bit on the neck by something. It looks like a spider bite. She had been feeling very bad and looked like she had the mumps except the bump was large and red. Monday the Doctor put her on some drugs that didn’t do anything. Wednesday we went to a different Doctor. They said she had MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus). They lanced and drained the bump on her neck and put her on some different drugs. She looked and felt worst but started to improve. Friday, Jo was back to her old self. The infection is clearing up.
I was sitting in Schooner Wharf when a group on a Pub Crawl from the cruise ship in the harbor came thru. Two young ladies sat beside me and I gave them one of my cards. One said that a friend had told her to go to Schooner and look for the guy that dances with the dog. I introduced myself and had a picture made with her. I love living here.
Friday, again at Schooner Wharf, I talked with some folks from Austin, TX. They were quite entertaining and I enjoyed their company. They had never been to Key West before so he had googled to learn about the area and found my blog.

The stock market was above 14,000 in the year 2000. It dropped to less than 7000 in 8 years. It started recovering in the year 2009. It rose to a little over 10,500 by mid year 2010 (half way back to where it was in the year 2000). Now it is dropping again. I am concern. Retirement has been wonderful and I don’t want to have to get a job. I hope this country continues its economic recovery.
