This Week on the Island 08/08/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Lobster Fest’ on Duval. The Volkswagen bus was giving away free Pacifico beer.
Weather: A lot nicer than it appears to be in most of the south-east. Come on down where it is cooler.
The book this week was ‘Eden Palms Murder’ by Dorothy Francis.
No dogs in bars, still waiting to hear from state government in Tallahassee.
Sunday was the 17th annual ‘Battle of the Bars’ on Lazy Lane behind Schooner Wharf. There were 39 teams. Each team consists of 7 members. #1- makes a margarita, #2- carries margarita to table, #3- drinks the margarita, #4-carries trash to recycle bins, #5- rolls a keg to the table and taps it, #6- draws 7 beers, #7- carries beers to team mates that are all in a line. Each team member drinks their beer and places the cup up-side-down on their head. The winning team was ‘The Raw Bar Rowdies’ from Half Shell Raw Bar. Their time was 1 minute 52 seconds. (Coral Reefers from Margaritaville came in second place) After each round the winners compete against each other. (Any team that lost can buy their way back into the ‘Battle’.) This year’s competition raised almost $24,000 for a total over the 17 years of more than $215,500. This year’s funds go to The Key West Wildlife Center and The Sister Season Fund.
Pat Croce’s Pirate Soul’ pirate museum on Front Street has closed. Johnny Rocco’s New York Restaurant on Green Street across from Sloppy Joe’s has closed. ‘In the tropics they come and they go,’ Jimmy Buffett.
Some friends from Iowa are in Key West this week. They dropped by with some home grown corn on Tuesday. Jo had an ear heated and buttered in a few minutes.
Thursday I ran into some friends from Cincinnati at Schooner Wharf. We had an adult beverage or two.
Saturday was ‘Lobster Fest’. Duval Street was blocked off from Front Street past Margaritaville for a street fair. The main attraction was LOBSTER. The price for lobster and rice was $12 up to the price for lobster, corn and potato’s of $22. There were other foods and other ways of getting lobster. I kind of like lobster on a stick. Jo and I also went to Geiger Key Marina for their lobster fest. A lobster tail with shrimp, cornbread and rice was less than $20.
Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band played on Saturday night for the Lobster Fest. The city went totally dark at about 9:30 PM. The electricity was back by 10:30 PM. We still do not know why.
Captain Tony’s birthday celebration will be August 10th in front of his old bar on Green Street. Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band will play.
