This Week on the Island 05/30/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Royal Poinciana’. These trees are beautiful. In the Caribbean they are known as Fire Trees because of their red blooms. The second picture is ‘out back of Schooner Wharf’. Jo and I and Sassi and Boca sat in the little park out back of Schooner on Saturday and listened to Michael McCloud. Dogs still are not allowed in Schooner Wharf.

Weather: Warm and sunny with a nice little breeze. 87 degrees in the day and 78 degrees at night. No tar from the BP oil rig.

The book this week was ‘Sunset and Stardust’ by Joe R Lansdale. This is his third book in as many weeks.

I would like to thank all of you that come over and say ‘HI’ when you are visiting in Key West. I really appreciate your reading my blog and feeling close enough to take some of your time to meet with me. I also appreciate your input on the blog.

Mike and Elaine, our friends from Chicago, are in town for the next few weeks. They are a lot of fun to be around.

I met some folks from Seattle. They said it was ‘very bright’ here. I had never heard Key West described that way, but considering the weather in Seattle, I guess it is bright here.

We, without the dogs, went to Schooner Friday afternoon to enjoy Michael McCloud. We were surrounded by a bunch of friends and others that read my blog. Had a great time.

I have put my blog together by year and started publishing books. I am now an author with 7 books published. You, of course can read any of my blogs on the blog site.

The Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend is always the ‘Minimal Regatta’ at Schooner Wharf Bar. Go to http://www.youtube.com/user/parroteyesvideo#p/u/24/wCWiC0Xtz4M to watch a video of last years Regatta. You get 1 sheet of plywood, 2 2x4’s, a roll of duck tape, and a box of screws to build a boat. You can paint but you cannot use any caulking. The races start Sunday about 2 PM and run with 4 boat eliminations until a winner is chosen. It usually ends about 8 PM and then the prizes are given out. It makes for a long but fun day. Lots of sun, lots of burned tourist.
