This Week on the Island 03/21/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘St. Patty’s at Finnegan’s Wake’. They blocked off James Street for the celebration. The second picture is ‘Me’ on Louie’s back deck. Lots of sun, pretty water, a bit cool as it was in the mid 60’s.
Weather: Cold and wet leading to sunny and in the 80’s by the weekend.
The book this week was ‘Gator A-go-go’ by Tim Dorsey. I love his stuff. He writes about Serge, a serial killer that roams Florida killing people that need killing. He is a little like Dexter the TV series, but Serge is a lot more creative about the way he kills people.
‘Spring Break Week Three’. Young people everywhere having a good time. I love it (except for the noise). It is good to see the young people still doing the same dumb stuff that I used to do. Some things seem to never go out of style.
Hope you had a happy St Paddy’s day Wednesday. Here in Key West it was in the high 50’s and raining, cold and wet at noon. But by 5:00 PM it was sunny and in the high 60’s.
I spent some time on my bicycle Thursday. I needed to get away from all the noise from the street construction and the work being done on the house next door. Sometimes I just need to sit under a palm tree on a beach and look at the sea. Lucky me, there is always one close by.
Saturday night was ‘Fight Night in the Keys’ with Mallory Square being blocked off for the event. Many people are upset because last week they had Victory Secret at Mallory Square. This really interferes with the sunset celebration.
The Spring Equinox was Saturday. That is the day the sun crosses the equator headed north. We here in Key West, being further south than you, had 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of dark last Monday. That was 5 days before the equinox. We are now at 12 hours and 8 minutes of daylight a day. When will you have 12 hours of each?

When I flushed the john the water would go round and round but the paper would not go down. I ‘Googled it’ and following instructions, I stuck a bent screwdriver into the small hole in the bottom of the bowl and reamed it out allowing more water flow. Everything works fine now. It apparently had lime buildup and restricted water flow.
Key West, You have got to love it
