This Week on the Island 05/06/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is the local Parrot Head Club cleaning up along North Roosevelt on a recent citywide street cleanup day. (we got t-shirts).
This week I read 'Alice in Wonderland' by Carroll Lewis on line at http://www.classicbookshelf.com/library/

The Weather: Sunny, low humidity and in the mid 80's. In other words, beautiful but DRY. We are still under water restriction.
This week was 'The Songwriters Week' in Key West.
The city has removed the statues from the Southernmost Point.
The city has annexed Christmas Tree Island so it can be built upon. (Another Sunset Key).
Last Sunday we were at Schooner Wharf listening to Michael McCloud. The band took a break and Michael felt faint and laid on the stage. The paramedics were called and he was taken to the hospital. He was back on stage Wednesday. He said that by the time they got him to the hospital he was fine. They ran a bunch of test but found nothing wrong.
Monday was 'A Taste of Key West'. It was held down at the Truman Waterfront beside the old 'sub-pins. A wonderful time was had by all and I personally ate my share of food. Over $100,000 was raised for AIDS.
Saturday was Derby Day at Sloppy Joe's. Green Street was blocked off and the heads on the bulls from Hemingway Days were changed to horses and the race was on. No pictures, forgot to carry my camera.
Saturday was 'Division Day' for the Mel Fisher investors. Once a year there is a meeting to divide all 'booty' between investors for that year. Yes, The Mel Fisher Group is still finding gold and emeralds from sunken Spanish ships.
Saturday was 'Cinco de Mayo' at Schooner Wharf. They had their normal taco eating, tequila shooting, hot pepper eating, Corona drinking contest.
-----------------------------Cinco de Mayo----------------------------
So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.
