This Week on the Island 04/28/2019

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: Another beautiful week. You really have to be ‘tuff’ to live here and put up with this wonderful weather every day.

On April 1982 the US Government used the Border Patrol to block US#1 where it leaves the mainland. They said they were looking for illegal aliens. So, traffic was backed up for miles and no one was getting to Key West. We sent a delegation to Washington, DC to try to get the road block removed. Nothing happened.
So, some Key West dignitaries called a meeting with the US Military and succeeded from the Union. Then they threw stale Cuban bread at the US Military and then surrendered. They applied for $1 Billion to repair our war-torn country but haven’t seen a dime yet.
Now that is the story of how the Conch Republic was formed, the secession, the war, the surrender, and the repair of the country after the war.
We are currently in our 37th annual 10-day celebration.

The running of ‘The Duval Mile’.

Easter is over and the Easter ham has been turned into ham and cheese sandwiches. I like Palmetto Cheese from Pawley’s Island, SC.

Hurricane season will be here soon. The city of Key West has started de-nutting the coconut trees. A coconut flying at 150 MPH can do some damage.

As usually, Teeki and I spent a little time listening to Michael McCloud.
