This Week On The Island 08/14/2011
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Battle of the Bars’. The second picture is ‘Captain Tony’.
Weather: Hot and humid with lots of sun.
This week I read ‘Shoot Him If He Runs’ by Stuart Woods. Another murder mystery in the Caribbean.
Last Sunday was the 18th ‘Battle of the Bars’ on Lazy Way Lane at Schooner Wharf Bar. It all started at 12:00 noon and continued until way past dark. There were 38 bars represented by their teams with Bourbon Street Pub being the winners. Over $22,850.00 was raise with over $215,000.00 being raised since the beginning of this event. http://www.schoonerwharf.com/
Happy birthday Captain Tony. A four day festival was held starting with his birthday party on Wednesday afternoon. ‘Tony Tales’ was held at The Chart Room on Friday. A $1,000 ‘Life’ scholarship will be given to a 2011 Key West High graduate planning to learn about life without going to college first. http://blog.placesaroundflorida.com/index.php/2011/08/06/capt-tony-days-key-west-2011/
‘Lobster Fest’ was held on Duval Street Saturday. The ‘bugs’ are on the grill. A couple of blocks were closed to traffic and tents were placed down the middle of Duval Street. Lots of people selling all sorts of things and of course, lots of lobster. Where else can you eat a lobster dinner ($22.50), sitting on the curb in 90 degree heat, while drinking a beer. http://www.keywestlobsterfest.com/
‘Sex on the Reef’. It happens a few times every year when the water temperature is just right and the tide is just right and there is a full moon. The coral release their spawn and the waters light up. The spawn glow in the dark and it is beautiful.
Some friends from Ohio were in town this week and we saw each other at different locations around Key West.
