This Week on the Island 07/17/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Mel Fisher’, the second picture is ‘Mel’s Handprints’ at Schooner Wharf and the third picture is ‘Living in the Keys’ this is at Geiger Key on the water across from Geiger Key Marina.

Weather: St Louis, 102; Owensville, KY feels like 123; Newark, NJ, 99; Islip, NY 93; NY, NY 97; Oklahoma City over 100 for 14 days; KEY WEST 89 with a sea breeze.

This week I read ‘Visions of Sugar Plums’ by Janet Evanovich. I started ‘Full Scoop’ by Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes.

This Week end was ‘Mel Fisher Days’. Mel is the guy that found the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha 26 years ago. The Atocha sank in a hurricane in 1622. It was 35 miles off the coast of Key West. So far Mel’s crew has recovered $450 million in treasure. There was a party at Schooner Wharf Thursday night. A street fair on Duval Street from 3 to 9 PM on Friday. Sunset Watersports is the center for the party on Saturday and Sunday will be a presentation at Mel Fisher’s Museum.

Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band played at The Mel Fisher celebration on Duval Street on Friday night. There was a stage set up in the intersection of Duval and Green on the corner by Sloppy Joes.

We seem to have a lot of people in town. I guess it is the economy. People can drive here, which is less expensive than flying. That leaves money that can be used to party. With visitors coming to the island, we need people to work on the dive boats, sunset cruises, restaurants, etc. All these people need places to live with keeps the price of housing from dropping very low. That keeps the tax base high and keeps the economy on this little island flowing alone.

McFaddens Beach House on Green Street across from Sloppy Joe's has closed.
