This Week on the Island 02/13/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Pelicans on the roof of the Turtle Museum’, ‘Hibiscus’, and ‘Bananas’.

Weather: Another cold front came thru Tuesday and dropped the temperature into the low 60’s, but it was again back in the 70’s the next day. Cold again on Saturday, back to the 70’s by Monday.

This week I read ‘Electric Barracuda’ by Tim Dorsey. If you like ‘Dexter’ the TV shows, you will love Serge. This serial killer goes around Florida killing ‘people that need killing’ just like Dexter.

Boca likes stuffed toys. This week we walked by a parked Conch Train and he stole the teddy bear that was tied to the front of the engine. I gave it back to the driver.

Friday night was the opening of McFadden’s Beach House on Green Street. It was $15 each and the money went to the Key West SPCA.

Key West Tea and Spice Company on Green Street closed.

Paradise Pizza and Pasta has opened on Green Street, across from Sloppy Joe’s. It is in the building that was Johnny Rocco’s.

Mel Fisher Museum has a little courtyard. On Feb 15th they will show ‘Carib Gold’ and on Feb 22 they will show ‘Escape from Hell Island’. Dogs are welcome. Please bring your own chair. Popcorn will be served. List of movies made in Key West http://www.moviesmadeinkeywest.com/updates.html

Historic Tours of America (HTA) are the guys that run the Conch Train and the Trolley Tours here in Key West. At one time they owned the Schooner Western Union and did tours for the tourist. They weren’t making enough money and the schooner was getting old and need repairs. They gave the schooner to a local group with the stipulation that if they decided to get rid of it they had to give it back to HTA. The local group got some grant money and pulled the schooner from the water and repaired it. Now the schooner is back in the hands of HTA and will restart the tourist tours soon. What a great deal for HTA. They gave away a schooner that needed repair and got back a repaired schooner.
