This Week on the Island 01/30/2011
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Key west coconut tree and blue sky’, the second and third picture are friends in from out of town enjoying Michael McCloud at Schooner. I also want to thank the guy from Pittsburg that dropped by to say how much he enjoyed the blog.
Weather: We are in the middle of our dry season. It has been raining a lot. This may be one of the wettest dry seasons on record. We have also been having a lot of sea fog this winter. This week has been wet and cold. It has cleared up for the week end with lots of sun and the temperature near 70.
This week I read ‘Ten Big Ones’ by Janet Evanovich.
There are lots of people on the island. It happens every year when folks get tired of the cold and the snow. No matter how cold I think it is here, the tourist always say it is lots better then the weather they left back home.
Last Sunday morning I was walking the dogs at about 6:30 AM. It was 54 degrees and I was wrapped up when we passed a young lady in shorts and a t-shirt. I thought that was kind of strange. Then we started passing more people in shorts and t-shirts. That was when I remembered there was another ‘run’ scheduled for that morning. We have lots of ‘runs’ in the Keys. I think if you are a runner, this may be a good place to live.
Key West would like people to ride bikes more and autos less. The cabs and the bus have bike racks on them. Bike riding is so popular that people are upset when the bike rack on the bus is full and they can’t load their bike. So in normal Key West fashion, in order to stop the complaining about no room on the bike rack, the city has removed the bike rack from the bus. Is that dumb or what?
I really like living here. Sun and sea and lots of visitors to our little island every week. It is hard to control my weight with all the good food available here. I am 6 foot and try to keep my weight between 180 pounds and 190 pounds. Like most people I start a new diet every year. I buy Banquet dinners when they are on sale at 10 for $10.00. I try to get the ones around 300 to 350 calories and eat one for lunch and one for dinner. That plus cereal for breakfast is less than 1000 calories a day. I feel like I have lost about 1000 pounds, but it is the same 10 pounds over and over again.
I bought some new Birki Haiti sandals. That makes 7 pair since moving here. I like Haiti’s, they have rubber soles and the salt water doesn’t seem to make them disintegrate.
