This Week on the Island 11/14/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Power Boat Races’ off Mallory Square and ‘Contrast’, an old square rigger and a new power boat (I like this one).

Weather: The week started cold (in the 60’s) but was back in the mid to high 70’s by Wednesday with lots of sun. I love this kind of weather; it is so much better that cold and snow that they are getting up north. In the low 80’s by the weekend.

The book this week was ‘Off the Chart’ by James W. Hall. A really good book.

A friend emailed me that they had just filmed one of Howard Livingston’s ‘Living on Key West Time’ at her house. Boy, I am jealous. Check out www.KeyWestTime.com

We set our clocks back on Sunday and Monday Jo started a new job where she goes to work one hour later. The dogs are having a hard time adjusting. I don’t know how they can tell. Sassi is ready for her noon walk at 11:00 AM and her afternoon walk at 4:00 PM.

Ran into some folks I know from Orlando. They were on Front Street outside Two Friends Restaurant. We talked for a while and then they headed off to Harpoon Harry’s for breakfast. Saw them later at Schooner.

It appears that the Flamingo Shop at the La Concha and the Conch Republic Store a few doors down on Duval are both closing the first of the year. Amigos, a new bar is opening, across from Capt. Tony’s on Green Street, where the Iguana used to be. ‘In the tropics they come and they go’, Jimmy Buffett.

This week was Power Boat Races. NASCAR at sea. The boats go round and round between Mallory Square and Sunset Key. Helicopters fly overhead looking for turtles, manatee and other sea life while being available to help in case of an accident. It is loud. While not racing they seem to sit in their boats and race the engines. They spend lots of money and leave very big tips.

The Power boat races were on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Thursday was a beautiful day to go to the Truman waterfront to see the boats on display. Friday night Duval
Street got trashed. Saturday was one of those days that it was so beautiful, I was glad just to be alive and living in the Key’s. Sunday they completed their racing and started leaving the island.

Hopefully next week will be a little less noisy.
