This Week on the Island 11/22/2009
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Key West Cemetery’. I had read that there was a big iguana problem at the cemetery. I could not find any, but I did find a few chickens. Key West has a motto ‘One Human Family’, but the cemetery is divided into different areas for different groups. (Battle Ship Maine, Catholic, Jewish, etc) I wonder how it feels to be buried just outside one of these areas.
Weather: Beautiful, this is why we live here. 80 degrees in the day and 70 degrees at night with lots of sun and a little breeze and no humidity. The house is wide open with a nice breeze blowing thru.
I started reading ‘The Encyclopedia of Wit, Humor and Wisdom’ 1949 by Pierce and Smith. It was like reading a bunch of jokes written for kids in the 5th grade. It is interesting how much our culture has changed in 60 years. I decided to read ‘Freedom Train: a story of Harriet Tubman’ by Dorothy Sterling (1954). It is about an escaped slaves and the slaves she helped escape to the north.
Things Tourist should know: Gold remains gold looking no matter how long it has been under the sea. Silver turns black and corrodes together. When you are diving and pick up a piece of black looking coral encrusted metal, don’t throw it away, it may be silver.
No big events on the island this week. We get a little rest after Fantasy Fest, the Parrot Heads, and the Off Shore Power Boat Races.
Speaking of diving, we have had another diver die while diving the Vandenberg.
Last Sunday we celebrated Boca, the huskies, birthday. He had cake and goodies for all his dog friends at Schooner Wharf. I think he had a good time.
The last of our house guest have left the island and it is time to get back to our normal activities.
The city is using helicopters to spray to kill mosquitoes. There is a fear of a Dengue Fever outbreak. Dengue fever is common in the tropics, but we don’t want it scaring away the tourist so the city is taking extra precautions.
Saturday we found 5 baby turtles (sliders) in the back yard. They are from the 3 large sliders we have in the back yard.
A tourist was standing in the street calling to the car driving away, ‘You have my cell phone’. I gave him mine and he said it wouldn’t do any good because he didn’t know her cell phone number. I said call YOUR number, when it rings she will know she has your cell phone. He called and the bag he was carrying started ringing.
Key West, You have got to love it
