This Week on the Island 09/13/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) ‘our banana tree’. A banana tree only produces once and then should be cut down to allow the next tree to develop. Ours has about 50 bananas this year. Sooner or later the weight of the bananas will cause the tree to fall, and then I will cut the bananas and hang them on the front porch and eat them as they get ripe.

Weather: Fred, the sixth named storm of the season seems to be headed north. We are getting rain most every day, but it is beautiful in between showers.

The book this week I continued ‘Don’t Stop the Carnival’ by Herman Wouk (1965).

Things Tourist Say: ‘The tourist with 7 small empty bottles. She wanted to get a little of each color of water in the Keys. (The water is clear; the color comes from what is on the bottom). (Clear/ sand on the bottom; dark/ rock on the bottom; green/ grass on the bottom; light blue/ shallow water; dark blue/ deep water, etc.)

This week was ‘Women Fest’, a lesbian-oriented festival. Nice looking young ladies everywhere holding hands. It is good that Key West is open-minded enough that these women can enjoy themselves without harassment.

Florida Governor was in Marathon at the Turtle Hospital to help in the release of a 300 pound green turtle, Margarita, back into the Florida Keys waters. Margarita was found off Key West 3 months ago caught in some trap lines and her left front flipper had to be amputated.

I spent Friday on the VA bus going to the Miami VA. Just my 6 month checkup with the dermatologist. Had a wart frozen on my foot and now I ham having a hard time walking.

The week ended with the ‘Mercury S.L.A.M.’, the Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters. It is a fishing tournament for tarpon, permit and bonefish with light tackle.
