This Week on the Island 09/30/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The picture this week is the Casa Marina. The Parrot Heads will be in Key West in about a month. Many of them will be staying at the Casa Marina. The Casa was built by Henry Flagler in 1920 as a destination for people riding his new railroad to Key West. In 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis: 'Battalion headquarters, with supporting Signal and Ordnance detachments, occupied a termite-infested premises in the Casa Marina Hotel, a venerable Victorian pile long past its prime. Leased from the Teamster's Union (then headed by James Hoffa) in 1962, the cost to the Army came to some $62,762.76 per year until January 1966, when the completion of permanent facilities for the 6/65 permitted termination of the lease by the Army.'

The Weather: Lots of rain then clear and beautiful. It actually got into the 70's a few nights.
This weeks book was 'The Vision' by Heather Graham. Another South Florida murder mystery.
Another slow week on the island. September is the middle of hurricane season.
Jo and I went to the end of US #1 On Whitehead Street and voted in the local elections on Monday. The vote ends on Oct 2nd, but we can vote early to beat the crowd. Met some friends for lunch at the Green Parrot. It started raining and we were stuck for about 2 hours.
MM24 (Mile Marker 24) Band playing at Sloppy Joe's. They have a song "I want to go where the bananas grow' and another 'Living on Key West time' that are wonderful.
Yard Dogs (zydeco music) Friday night at Schooner. Good 'swamp' music.
