This Week on the Island 09/02/2007

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is Casa Antigua at 314 Simonton Street. This was the hotel that Hemingway stayed in when he first came to Key West. Some years ago there was a fire that burned out the center of the building. It was rebuilt with the center open to the sky and a garden area added on the ground floor. If you get a chance, check it out.

The books this week: I checked out Canterbury Tales by Geoffery Chaucer. It was a small book, in small print, and in old English. I took it back to the library and checked out 'Canterbury Tales' translated by Barbara Cohen in the young adults section. Much more enjoyable. I also read 'William Shakespeare' by M.M. Reese.

The Weather: Hot. September is the height of hurricane season and many boats have left the area. The Key West bight is pretty empty.

Met some friends from Jacksonville over at Schooner Wharf. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and I enjoyed their company.

Tuesday morning the dogs and I watched the eclipse of the moon. We got up at 5:00 AM and took as walk and then sat on the front porch and read the paper, drank coffee, and watched the moon disappear.

Tuesday, about lunch time, a black scorpion came out from under the couch and headed for Sassi. It had it's stinger up and was ready to attack. It was crushed by 'Live from Key West', a new CD from The Paradise Charitable Foundation (http://www.blogger.com/WWW.ParadiseFoundation.org). Sassi slept thru the whole thing. The scorpion's dead body was dumped on the side of Caroline Street. The CD was recorded at MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) in Key West.

The heavy machinery is still clearing off the old Jabours site behind Schooner Wharf. The VFW on Elizabeth Street came down Thursday morning and Century 21 on Caroline Street is scheduled for Monday. I think I will just sit on the front porch and watch the whole thing.

'Women in Paradise' started this weekend and continues all of next week. Lots of ladies holding hands. The center of attraction used to be near the Southernmost Point. But since Atlantic Shores on South Street has been demolished, I don't know where they will meet.
