This Week on the Island 05/07/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key West: a city of change. The pictures this week are (1) Key West 1838. The road is Whitehead Street. The pond is where Duval will be built later. The outskirts of town were Eaton Street and Elizabeth Street. Beyond that was Indian country. Picture (2) is Key West 1950. Most all land has been built upon. You will note that North Roosevelt Blvd has water on both sides. It will later be filled with marl for the development of Sears, Kmart, Winn Dixie, Publix, etc, etc.

The Weather: We had some people come to visit for the week end. They brought some cooler weather with them. The temperature has dropped back to the lower 80's and the humidity has gone away. The air Conditioning is off again.

This weeks book was 'Hoot' by Carl Hiaasen. It is a great kids story and the movie is probably very good. I know I like the songs by Buffett on the 'Hoot' CD.

I got another 'opportunity' to ride the VA bus to Miami again this week. Another 4 1/2 hours to get there, 4 hours there, and 4 1/2 hours to get back. This time my appointment took a whole hour (had my teeth cleaned).

This week of course was 'Cinco de Mayo' and the taco eating, Corona and tequila drinking contest at Schooner Wharf. Jo felt cheated, she only got 2 tacos and I got three. -HISTORY LESSON- On May 5, 1862 (during the American Civil War) 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 (sent by Emperor Napoleon III) at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City.

'The 11th Annual Key West Songwriters' Festival' also took place this week.

We also had the second annual 'Tropical Heat' for the gays and lesbians.

Jo and I went on the 'Schooner Western Union Stargazer Cruise' last Sunday night. It was wonderful.
