This Week on the Island 04/16/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HAPPY EASTER

Key West: a city of change. The pictures this week are (1) The building across from Captain Tony's on Green Street has been demolished and 'The Iguana' is suppose to be built there. and (2) the building next to Captain Tony's on Green Street is being renovated into a bar/restaurant.

The Weather: It has cooled (80 degrees) and there is a constant wind and no humidity. Key West is the driest city in Florida and we are in the end of the dry season. We have not had rain is some time, but Miami is getting flooded. The dry season ends when hurricane season begins the first of June. We need some rain.

This weeks book was 'Beyond Paradise' by the Key West Authors' Coop. This is a book of short stories about Key West by a bunch of Key West Authors. I enjoyed some of them and others were just OK.

The Red Barn Theatre is next door to Hard Rock Cafe and behind the Women's Club on Duval Street. Local actors perform live shows there. The last show Jo and I saw was 'The Spitfire Bar and Grill'. 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' is coming to town this month. I look forward to seeing it. 'Let's do the time warp again'.

Want to move to Key West? Want a job in Key West? Need a place to live in Key West? Want to spend a lot of time outside in Key West? Want all of the above? The Lazy Dog is having a contest for a job that pays $75,000 a year and a place to stay for free. The Lazy Dog is at Hurricane Hole (on the left as you cross the last bridge into Key West). This is the place I take visitors to go kayaking. If you are interested go to http://www.winajobinkeywest.com/ .

The Mel Fisher Group found some more gold from the Atochia.

The Social Director for our Key West Parrot Head Club was married at Fort Zackery Taylor at sunset on Saturday, April 15th. We all wish Dusty and his bride a very long and happy marriage.
