This Week on the Island 01/22/2006
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: A beautiful week, except for Wednesday night when it got into the 50's.
Speaking of Wednesday night, that was the night of the Monthly Social for the Local Parrot Head Club. We met at 'Capt. Run-A-Grounds' on Garrison Bight at the intersection of Palm and Truman. It is a floating restaurant and boy was it cold. We had a good meeting with 5 new members in attendance.
The 'Snotty Yachties' have finished their racing and packed-up their stuff and are leaving the island. They had a great week. The cold front and high winds coming thru on Tuesday and Wednesday made sailing on the waters around Key West very hazardous. They all had a change to get a great tan with the temperature being in the 80's last Sunday and Monday and then back in the 80's again for this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
This weeks book was 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven' and was another by Mitch Albom. I also am reading 'Oxymoronica' by Dr. Marty Grothe. It is a whole book of sayings by famous people. These sayings seem to contradict themselves. A good example would be 'Army Intelligence' or jumbo Shrimp'. I can only read a few pages a day. One good one is by Mark Twain, 'It takes a heap of sense to write good nonsense'.
Shrimp Boat Sounds, Jimmy Buffett's recording studio on the Key West Bight is 1 block from my house. Jimmy has been recording in the studio for the last two weeks.
I met three folks and their dogs from South West Florida PHC at Schooner Wharf on Sunday. Jo and I enjoyed their company while we listened to Michael McCloud. One was the President of their Parrot Head Club, Barb Sampson. Michael played 'Schooner Wharf Bar Dog' and I picked up Sassi to dance. As I looked back at the crowd, there were at least 3 other people dancing with their dog. I guess Sassi and I have started a new dance craze.
On Saturday Jo, Sassi, Wyleigh and I went to Bayview Park for the Key West Sea Food Festival. It was 78 degrees and sunny. We had lobster tail, a seafood platter and $1 beer. Life is good.
