This Week on the Island 01/01/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The Weather: Again it was cool, 58 degrees the first of the week but in the high 70's by New Year's Eve.

I ran into two Parrot Heads from Chicago. Nice ladies, they had never heard of 'This Week on the Island'. I suggested they ask their PHIP representative about it.

Jo and I spent some time this week cleaning up around the house and giving 'stuff' to the Salvation Army. I also worked on rebuilding the deck on the side of the house.

This weeks books were (1) 'Love for Sale' by John Leslie. It was another Gideon Lowery mystery. Gideon is a Private Detective that lives on upper Duval and investigates incidents in Key West. (2) 'Key West Bar Zen' by Ray Campbell and Jim Thomsen. A book full of quotes from Key West Bartenders. (3) 'The Incredible Search for the Treasure Ship Atocha' by Brad Matsen. A book about Mel Fisher and his finding the Nuestra Senora de Atocha on July 29, 1985 and the recovery of over $450 million in gold, silver and precious stones. He had searched for 17 years and lost a son and daughter-in-law in the search.

New Years Eve in Key West. All the Bars/Restaurants have a party, there are lots of organization parties, there are lots of private parties, BUT the three really big parties are: (1) Sloppy Joe's; watch the conch shell on the top of Sloppy Joe's fall at midnight. Duval Street is so crowded that is you passed out you would wake up still standing up. (2) Schooner Wharf; watch the pirate wench lowered from the mast of the Schooner Liberty at midnight. The Bight is so crowded that if you passed out you would end up in the Bight. (3) 801 Bourbon: watch 'Sushi' the female impersonator as she is lowered in a large pink slipper. Upper Duval is so crowded that is you passed out you may end up in bed with someone of the same sex. AND, let's not forget the fireworks display on the White Street Pier.
