This Week on the Island 06/26/2005
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Weather: It's raining in Miami. It's hot in the center of the country. It's cold and wet in other parts of the country. California keeps having earthquakes. Key West: sunny and beautiful.
Rafael Diaz Rey finally made it to America. He is the Cuban that has made boats of three vehicle only to be sunk by the US Coast Guard. His last boat/car was a 1948 blue Buick taxi. The Coast Guard took him to Guantanamo Bay but has now brought him and his family to America . He should be able to make a good living restoring old cars in Miami.
Another sunken ship has been found off the coast of the Key's. Boats and ships are found all the time so this should not be big news except this is an 'old' ship. All that is left is ballast stones and a few timbers. Hope to know more later.
This Week was 'African American Heritage' in Bahama Village. The festivities took place on Whitehead Street back by the Moose Lodge a few blocks from the Southernmost Point. Lots of interesting food, local bands, church groups, children's groups and a good local community event.
Saturday was also 'Tropical Fruite Fiesta' at Bayview Park. It is located on Truman Ave where US 1 changes from a 4 lane to a two lane. Most people do not notice the nice park on the left because they are too busy fighting the traffic and merging into one lane.
Hurricane season is here. The city is neutering all the coconut trees. A coconut flying at 150 miles per hour can do some damage in a hurricane.
The next place to be torn down appears to be Atlantic Shores. It is to be converted to condos. Many of us will miss the nude bar/pool and the movies shown by the pool.
Key West, You have got to love it
