This Week on the Island 06/19/2005
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Happy Fathers Day!
The Weather: We have reached that time of the year when the forecast is the same for every day: 78 at night and 88 in the day with mostly sun and a chance for showers. I have also noticed that we are cooler than many places (91 in Ohio, 95 in New York, etc).
Tropical Storm Arlene produced lots of rain. Century 21, across the street, is now putting on a new roof. The smell of hot tar is in the air. This mixes with the noise of the condo's being built across the street. This week the power company decided to replace the power poles on this block with concrete poles. The street has been blocked to thru traffic as the power trucks block the street. So I have power trucks in the street, the smell of tar in the air and the sound of construction from the condos. I just turned the 'Buffett music' a little louder.
This week (June 12-18) was 'Cuban American Heritage week', there are many activities all week but the one I enjoyed the most was the 'Coast to Coast Conga Line' on Friday night down Duval Street and the Latin Dance Party at El Meson de Pepe's on Wall Street at Mallory Square. There was a 'Cigar Dinner' on Thursday night but it cost $75.00. Pictures at http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/KeyWestPictures/lst
This week ( June 16-19) also was 'Chicken Fest' with a 'Poultry in Motion' parade down Duval on Saturday night. Of course there was the 'Best Drumsticks' (leg) contest at Sloppy Joe's and the 'Fowl Follies' at the Pier House. Let's not forget the 'Who let the Birds out' bash at Fairvilla Megastore and the movie 'Chicken Run' at Atlantic Shores. And of course the 'It taste like chicken' cook off at the Conch Hotel on Duval or the 'Why did the chicken cross the road' street fair all day on Duval on Saturday. Pictures at:
