This Week on the Island 08/05/2012

This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
Weather: Feels like August. In the high 80’s in the day and the low 80’s at night.

This week I read ‘A Land Remembered’ by Patrick D. Smith. It is a history of Florida. It starts with a man and a woman leaving Georgia during the Civil War and moving to Florida. They raise a family, die; the family raises a family, etc.

Sassi is getting very old. She wants to spend some quality time with me so let’s go for a short walk.

We go out the front gate and take a right on Caroline Street. We pass B. O.‘s Fish Wagon and notice he has taken down the ropes and installed doors.

Next we pass Pepe’s. That is Spanish Pepe’s not French Pep-Pa’s.

Harpoon Harry’s is a 1950’s dinner on the corner of Caroline and Margaret.

We take a left on Margret and go pass Half Shell Raw Bar.

Next we walk pass Turtle Kraals. A kraal is a pen. This is where they used to make turtle soup and turtle steaks.

This is the building that housed the very first Margaritaville.

Next is the Cuban Coffee Queen. They have a Key Westerner sandwich that is great with a Café con Leache.

This is the building that will soon house a new restaurant and a brew pub.

We pass Schooner Wharf Bar

And walk pass the Key West Bight with the Conch Republic Seafood restaurant in the background.

Then we go pass the shops of Lazy Way Lane.

We walk pass Shrimp Boat Sounds (Buffett’s recording studio)

And we go by Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop

We head up Elizabeth and pass the vacant lot that will soon be a 96 room hotel.

We are home.

Did you notice the blue skies and white clouds.

Some friends from Iowa must be in town, we found fresh ears of corn on the front porch.
