This Week on the Island 08/07/2016
‘This Week on the Island’ is
written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key
West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
Weather:
Forcast for next 3 months: Hot and humid with a chance for showers. Maybe a
Hurricane or two.
This
week I read ‘Ship of Fools’ and ‘Beach Shoot’ by Rodney Riesel.
We get
lots of visitors to Key West, especially in the winter. It starts the week of
Halloween with Fantasy Fest (our busiest week of the year along with New Year’s).
It stays pretty busy on the island up to and including the month of June when
school lets out for the summer. There are lots of ‘FEST’ here in the summer to
draw more tourist to the island when it is hot and humid. We just finished Mel
Fisher Days, Hemingway Days, Lobster Min-Season, and will have Battle of the
Bars this week end. Next week will be Lobster Fest and on it goes. I used to
love the summers when no one was here but us locals. My how things have
changed. The slowest month of the year
is September because school starts back up and summer is over and everybody is
back to their normal life.
The city
is de-nutting the coconut trees on Lazy Way Lane, before the hurricanes get
here this year. September is the peak of hurricane season.
Rode my
trike down to Fort Zack to the palm tree next to my favorite bench. This is a
great place to have your picture taken.
Went to
Hogs Breath to have a Hog Beer or two. Remember Aug 7th is
international beer day.
Went
down to Willy-T’s to listen to Dallas. He plays a lot of Woodstock music.
Just
another Key West sunrise.
I came
home one day and the wife was eating corn on the cob. Seems that our friends
from Iowa were in town and brought us some Iowa corn. It didn’t last long and
we really appreciate them thinking of us.
Key West
you have got to love it
