This Week on the Island 05/26/2013
‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

A waterspout over the Bahia Honda Bridge.
Weather: Hot and humid with a chance for rain for the next 6 months. I love summer in the Keys.
This week I read ‘Forest of the Night’ by James W. Hall. I also read ‘The Riptide’ by Tim Dorsey.
Hope you have a great Memorial Day.
New Bud bottle. Bud, owned by Inbev, that Belgian Company, is no longer an American beer, since 2008. They have lost many American customers that believe in ‘buy American’, so they now have a new bottle that looks American. Trying to fool you into buying their beer.
Everything is expensive here. We have 3 different insurances on the house, homeowners, flood, and wind. Flood is from FEMA and is not cheap but it and homeowners are dirt cheap compared to wind (hurricane) insurance. Our wind insurance went up a lot this year. Wooden shutters are no longer considered adequate .We spent a little over $5,000 to protect our house with lexan panels over all openings. The reduced rate on our wind insurance should give us our money back in discounts in less than two years.
Happy Birthday, South Carolina! This week marked the 225th Anniversary of SC becoming the 8th state in the country!
I see this picture and I think’ Key West.
Boca and I went to Schooner on Thursday and ran into some friends from Chicago. They are readers of this blog. We talked and they provided the adult beverage.
This Sunday, May 24, is the ‘Minimal Regatta’. A team of 6 people build a boat out of 1 sheet of plywood, two 2x4’s, a bunch of screws, and a roll of duct tape. You cannot use calking but you can paint. The regatta is held in the Key West Bight just outside Schooner Wharf Bar. It is a whole day event and a wonderful time to be had by all.
We leave you this week with a film of the 18th annual Regatta.
