This Week on the Island 11/06/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week, from the Key West Citizen, (click to enlarge) is ‘Jimmy Buffett on Duval for the Parrot Heads’. The second picture is ‘Parrot Heads on Duval’ waiting for Jimmy.

Weather: Perfect with the high in the mid 80’s and the lows in the mid 70’s. A cold front came thru on Monday and cleared out the humidity and clouds and left us with blue skies, lots of sunshine and temperatures in the mid 80’s. The Parrot Heads couldn’t ask for better weather.

No book this week.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back and check your smoke detectors.

Lots of friends from everywhere on the island this week. It started last week with some Parrot Heads coming in early for Fantasy Fest, then this week I met lots of folks from everywhere. There were two ladies (one from Georgia and one from South Carolina) on Caroline Street, there was the guy (from New Jersey) that got out of his car on Green Street to say hi, there were the folks from the Palmetto Parrot Head Club at Tuesdays on Duval Street, there were all the folk at Schooner, and of course there were the Parrot Heads at the different parties around town and the ones on Duval outside Margaritaville. Friday, while sitting on the front porch working on the blog, a lady dropped by to give me some strawberry preserves. They were wonderful. It was good to see all of you Parrot Heads on the island.

The second time this week we have had airplanes skid off the end of the runway. They have both been small private jets.

The U.S.S. Mohawk will be leaving Key West and destine to become an artificial reef up at Sanibel Island. They need over $400,000 to dry dock her and do repairs. As an artificial reef she can live on as a destination for divers.

Andy Rooney died Friday night at the ripe old age of 92.

Next week will be ‘Off Shore Power Boat Racing’.
