This Week on the Island 12/16/2007

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is The Shops on Lazy Lane. With so much of old Key West being replaced with condos, you may want to save this picture.

The Weather: Beautiful. The air conditioner is running and the hibiscus are in bloom.

The book this week was 'Paradise Screwed' by Carl Hiaasen. It is 'shorts' from his newspaper writings.

The yacht 'Insatiable' is in the bight http://www.myinsatiable.com/

The Schooner Western Union is in Miami in dry dock being reconditioned. The Schooner Liberty is in its slot. The Schooner Compass Rose has been sold and its slot is taken by the Schooner Hindu.

'Bubba's' opened on the corner of Margaret and Fleming. Many years ago it was a service station, then the service bays were converted into a laundry, then the office was converted into a restaurant with tables under the overhang where the pumps used to be. Now it is 'Bubba's' with a laundry, a restaurant and tables out front.

The new sand at Fort Zack Beach has been spread-out and it is really nice. A great place to relax and watch the ocean. You know I need a place to 'get away from all the stress' and relax.

Harbor House is under construction and the first building is on Lazy Way Lane and next to Schooner Wharf. It is so close to the road that it does not look like they can build the steps to the front porch without taking up part of Lazy Way Lane. It is obvious to me the Lazy Lane and Schooner Wharf will be gone in a few years. Just as soon as the new property owners purchase these units and start complaining about all the noise at Schooner Warf. http://travel.msn.com/Guides/article.aspx?cp-documentid=437617&GT1-10739

P. T.'s (the #1 Late Night Locals Spot) on the end of Caroline Street closed some time ago. Half Buck Freddie's moved into that location this week. I will miss PT's Cuban Roast Port with black beans and rice and plantains.

Wednesday I got a little sun sitting at Schooner Wharf listening to Michael McCloud.

Olga (tropical storm) got here on Thursday and brought a little rain. A cold front is expected to moved thru and is suppose to dropped the temp to 65 degrees by Sunday night.

The Florida State Song is 'Suwannee River'. There is a contest in process to replace the song with something a little more 'politically correct'.

Saturday night was the lighted boat parade. It was 80 degrees at 8:00 PM. There were people everywhere around the bight. The parade started in the bight, went out to the gulf, took a left and down to Mallory Square, then out to Fort Zack and the Atlantic, and then back into the bight. It was really nice.

Buffett was in town this week.
